1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace?
2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?
3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?
4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
Today is Baptism Sunday!!
Baptism is an external sign of God’s inward working grace
It is a symbol that highlights our transfer from Adams family to Christ's family
12 When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
Romans 5:15–19 (NLT)
15 But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.
16 And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins.
17 For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.
18 Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.
19 Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.
Baptism signifies that transfer from Adam to Christ. The transfer from disobedience to obedience.
Baptism tells the story of the death of our old life and the birth of the new life in Christ
20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
1 Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
Therefore, it signifies our identification with Jesus Christ as our savior and Messiah.
Baptism expresses our desire to take on the life of Christ. We are no longer ruled by death because in our baptism we declare that our old self is done away with. Like Christ, we have been crucified, dead, buried, and resurrected to live a NEW LIFE by the power that is made available to us through Christ.
For these reasons, Baptism is NOT simply a ritual.
Baptism tells the story that we are new. Born again. Transformed. And Transferred from allegiance to Adam to Allegiance to Christ.
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
It is NOT Baptism that accomplishes all of this.
The grace of God accomplishes this. Baptism, however, is our public testimony that this transfer has taken place.
It is the external witness and external proclamation of what has already happened in our lives.
As we celebrate the baptism of people today we must ask ourselves a couple of questions...
1- Have we made the transfer from Adam to Christ?
This transfer is free! There are no charges applied to US because, in Christ and through Christ, the charges are paid in full.
2- Do YOU remember your baptism?
3- Do YOU remember the vows your baptism signified?
4- Have YOU continued to live your life by the power of the Resurrected Christ? Is your life a NEW LIFE that only Christ can provide in you and through you?
Was your Baptism more than a ritual, but an outward sign of God’s inner working grace?
Do you need to allow the Holy Spirit to comfort you, convict you, and transform you so you can continue to live your life as a full surrender to the working of God’s grace?
